2025 Goals

Last year, I did not set any goals for myself and life felt  quite disorganised and with out any direction. I am a person who needs something to work towards while also being spontaneous in bursts. I like to have a direction but I also like to accommodate some surprises that might come along the way.

Coming to the goals- I analysed different areas of life and decided that the below goals are my priority. For each of these goals, I have a set of habits. I will cover some of it here. I have not used "SMART" approach in describing them below.

1. 19-20 BMI: During COVID, I gained a bit of weight and I managed to lose some of it and my BMI is normal. However, I would prefer to be at a lower-mid range of the BMI. I think this would help me manage my health better. This would mean- eating balanced meals, consistent workouts and walks, and the main one for me- stress management and sleeping hours management.

2. Earn 30 PDUs this year to maintain my PMP certification: It is self explanatory- I would like to maintain my certification and would need at least 30 PDUs this year. I am setting some hours aside every month to focus on this.

3. Develop Content Creation ability: Social media is no longer a place to just express your thoughts- it is also a space to express our creativity. I have been negligent in this area and have almost vanished from it. My perspective on social media has also changed. I think it provides excellent opportunities and I would like to explore some of them. I am learning and I hope over time, I will improve and put out more meaningful content.

4. Focus on Mental/Brain Health: I have come to realise over the years how important mental health is and I am not just talking about depression- our brain is also aging with our body and needs more and more care as we grow older. All these years, I had never done anything intentional to keep my brain sharp and creative. This year, I would want to do some intentional training and conditioning of the brain- I am already learning 2 foreign languages and would like to keep that up. Additionally, with the help of ChatGPT, I am focussing on solving complex mathematics problems mentally and nourish it with some good quality literature.

5. Investments: I have set a target for investing an x amount during the course of this year. I am setting aside sometime every week for research for this and taking small steps towards investing the amount x that I have planned.

Apart from this, there are some other areas of interests that I would like to cultivate during this year but they are more of hobbies and not really high on my list of priorities or goals this year.

Language Learning- My experience with learning languages on DuoLingo

Ever since I learned that learning a new language would help in our cognitive abilities as we age and reduce the risk of diseases like Alzheimers' and Dementia, I wanted to do it. I think the use of mobile phones has spoiled us a bit. When everything is at our fingertips and we do not need to store a lot of information, especially for non-students, hardly any effort goes into memorizing things. Everything can be looked up easily over and over again, we can set reminders for tasks and also there is no longer a need to memorize phone numbers any more. I was no different, and a was/am a good candidate for memory loss. I decided to learn a language and then another one.

Slightly over a year ago, I decided to learn French using Duolingo. Why French- well, I have a lot of French speaking colleagues at work, made it a logical choice. When I started, DuoLingo was a free app where you can make any number of mistakes but gradually, it moved to a paid model. Ads started popping up and also, you cannot make more than 5 mistakes per day. I didn't mind this to be honest, mainly because I do not spend more than 5 mins a day on learning.

The biggest positive for me with Duolingo is the gamification of our learning. No one likes to be on a losing streak and as long as you complete a lesson, you can keep extending your streak on a daily basis. For someone as competitive as me, I like this very much and it has surely helped me stay consistent.

Apart from this, the other positive is the possibility to learn multiple languages simultaneously on the app. A few months ago, due to my love for Chinese dramas, I took up learning Mandarin Chinese on the app.

Also, there is a spaced repetition concept built into the app, so it is quite unlikely that you will forget most of what you have learnt in a couple of weeks.

The biggest negative for me is the lack of real conversations. Though there are several speaking exercises, I personally did not find it as effective as having a real conversation in the language I am learning. If someone directly speaks to me in French or Mandarin, I am unable to understand them well or if I have understood, respond appropriately. Basically, there is a lack of confidence in having good conversations.

The other negative is the lack of basics being taught. For French, it was still okay as the script is similar to English. However, there are several accents and there was no priming on how these could be used. For Mandarin, it was way too difficult as the script is something unfamiliar. The pinyin is not always pronounced the way it is written. So, for someone from India, it is really difficult. There are no basics on how we are supposed to read and understand the characters. There are some written exercises for Mandarin characters, but I do not remember any of it because it is just some random words and characters.

My verdict- Use Duolingo to get into language learning and practice some common words, phrases and sentences but use it as a supplemental tool, rather than as a primary tool for learning languages.

2024- Last 100 Days Plan

2024 is the first year in several years where I did not start the year with any goals. At the beginning of the year or even in late 2023, I could not think of anything specific that I wanted to achieve in 2024. I invested in a fancy planner but it did not help me gain the clarity I needed. Recently, I was listening to a podcast where Ankara Warikoo was being interviewed and what he said stuck with me. He recommended that people set input based goals rather than outcome based goals. Outcome based goals are not always in our control but input based goals are always in our control.

What exactly is the difference in the two? Input based goals are those where we state what work we would put in- Example: Read a page everyday or work out everyday etc. Outcome based goals are those where expect a pre-defined outcome- Example: 10k followers on Instagram, or , lose 45kgs this year. Even if we put in the work, we may not achieve the desired outcome. However, we would be still be making progress if we use input based goals- may be we will have 8k followers or maybe we will lose 30kg instead of 45- the work has gone in and we have made progress.

This podcast helped me with a mindset shift. Last year when I thought of what I would like to achieve next year- I was thinking in terms of outcome. After listening to the podcast, I asked myself, what am I willing to do or where would I like to focus my energy on for whatever time we still have left this year.

The other mindset shift I made was in terms of what is my purpose in life? Many people have amazing level of clarity to this deep question. Not me. I do not have a bigger purpose in life. I decided that until I find the bigger "What"/ "Why",  I will work on self-improvement and personal development. So I put together a to-do list to work consistently for the rest of the year.

Here's a glimpse of my to-do list (not exhaustive as some are quite private) for the rest of the year:

- Read: for 2 mins everyday

- Write 1 line in my journal everyday

- Meditate for 1 min everyday

- 30 mins of walk everyday

- 30 mins of workout everyday

- Go to bed before midnight everyday

- Write a blog post daily (not necessarily publish it)

- No sugar except on festivals and birthdays

Currently I am in the pre-100 days plan period and I am testing it out to see how easy or difficult it is for me to keep to my to-do list. I would be refining in as needed to keep it as realistic as possible.

In case you are a bit all over the place like me, and do not have concrete goals in place, I suggest to give this approach a shot. I hope it will give you a plan to work towards.

2024- Restart

In 2023, though I had every intention of actively posting on my blog, it did not materialize. I prioritised my work, which demanded more energy from me, and rest, which I needed to replenish my energy after all the efforts that went in. I did read quite a bit to unwind and also journaled on a daily basis, which seemed more important to me than focusing on the blog.

I love blogging and this year, I plan to make a comeback and hopefully I will not only be consistent but also try my best to provide value rather than just life updates.

I have developed a lot of new interests and I am excited to share some of them with soon.

See you soon.

I'm Back

I did not write a word the whole of 2022 in this blog. I have no excuse, it was just not my priority. However, I realised how much I love sharing in this space, so decided to return this year when I did a mid year life assessment.

What has changed since I last wrote properly?

- The pandemic has eased and it is no longer a global health emergency

- After working from home for 2 whole years, now there is a hybrid way of working (working from home on certain days and from office on other days)

-  Gaining some pandemic weight

- Resumption of travel world over

- A war

- Twitter take over

What have I been upto?

- Lots of reading

- Working on my goals

- Calligraphy classes

- Returning to office

- Working hard

Anyway, this post was mainly to share that I am returning here and I have every intention to stay regular here. Watch out for this space!

Saying Hello on the Last Day of 2021

I have been missing in action on this blog. I have created another blog and gave a lot of my attention to that blog and neglected this one. Anyhow, this blog will always be my first love and it will get more of time and attention in the coming year. I didn't want to end this year without any post on this blog. Hence, here I am today.

This year was a tough year as the pandemic progressed and wreaked a great disaster and it does not seem to go away. It meant a lot of staying indoors for a big part of the year and just when it felt like things were getting better, it got worse.

I just hope, 2022 brings a lot of cheer, good health and lot of happiness for everyone around the world.

Lockdown 5.0 and Unlock 3.0

We had another lockdown restricted to Bangalore and some other parts of Karnataka. It was not as stringent as the initial phases of Lockdown from March through May. It seemed like business as usual anyway. Today the lockdown was lifted but I don't feel any difference as such. Ofcourse, ordering essentials from online platforms resulted in difficulty. The situation at hospitals is apparently pretty bad. I hope we all stay safe. This Friday sets off a series of festivals in the country. I hope everyone will be sensible and not go over the top with public celebrations. I hope everyone celebrates festivals privately this year.

Unlock 2.0 Days 7 to 14

I took a week long break from blogging. I wanted to focus on a few other things. I do not know how much longer I should continue with my lockdown diary. Anyway, after a long time, I went out for grocery shopping a couple of days back. I am glad to be well stocked now. We are all set to go into a city-wide lockdown from tomorrow evening for the next 10 days. I'm not sure if 10 days are good enough but hey, it's a start. In other news, Amitabh Bachchan and most of his family tested positive. He and his son are hospitalised. Other than that, there is nothing new. There have been rumours floating around that there are some cases in our neighbourhood but nothing is verifiable at the moment. Oh, also, West Indies and England are playing test cricket match in an empty stadium without use of saliva on the ball but with back sweat instead. The world is slowly moving ahead, not sure if it is the right thing to do.

Unlock 2.0 Days 4, 5 and 6

The cases of virus infections have grown a lot in the city. There is a shortage of doctors too is what I have heard. India is now in the 3rd position in the world with respect to the number of infections. The recovery rate is good too but still a long way to go. Yesterday, there was a state-wide lockdown. While most businesses remained closed, people in general were roaming about as usual, most (not all) with a mask on. WHO is contemplating on declaring the disease airborne- which, if true is going to be disastrous. I am not sure when we can have a genuine vaccine in place which is safe and efficacious. Life at work is just the same. Nothing new or noteworthy at the moment. I think I must take a day of to sort my life. I am kind of feeling a bit overwhelmed with not being able to get ahead in whatever I have planned. I need to set new boundaries, set some new goals. I am rambling now :-). 'til next time!

Unlock 2.0 Days 1, 2 and 3

Nothing much has changed since Unlock 1.0. However, we are no longer allowed to go out from 8pm to 5am in the city. Also, Sundays are a complete shutdown in the city. The cases in the country are rising and the recovery rate has said to be improved. In Bangalore the doubling rate of cases is down to 4 days which is scary. I hope people in the city exercise more caution and are able to control the disease. For us indoors, we have settled to this new life. Oh! Before I forget, I had to stop going to my walks in the mornings so I am back to working out at home.

Unlock 1.0 Day 22

Today is the last day of Unlock phase 1.0. Tomorrow the phase 2 begins. There was an address to the nation from the PM the evening where an extension of the food scheme was announced primarily targeting the poor people. There were some crazy discussions at work- overall a busy day and kind of productive. Today, I also complete my 30 day walking challenge, which I am proud to announce that I have managed to complete without any issues. Tomorrow onwards, I will walk a bit for sure but will primarily focus on other forms of exercises. Today is also the last day of my 30 days of journaling challenge. I am excited about it. It is like another achievement. These challenges are really challenging while working from home all the time. Anyway, I will try these out in a couple of months maybe.

Unlock 1.0 Day 20, 21

Yesterday was a crazy busy day and if you ask me what kept me busy, I won't be able to point to one thing specifically. It was a million little  things. I really couldn't make time to blog at all. Today, so far is nothing new. It is the same old day. I feel quite unproductive today even though I have cleaned the house today. I have the rest of my to do list to complete and I have not even started! I guess it is natural to have some off-days. The number of virus cases in the city has gone up significantly. I do not see any solid measure put in place to curb the cases. Hope something solid and strictly enforceable measure would be announced soon.

Unlock 1.0 Day 18,19

I took a break from blogging again for a day. I had a lot on my plate with the walking and journalling challenge, I could not find time to blog. It was an uneventful day anyway.
We learnt today that an area, about 200m from our home, has been sealed off due to positive cases of the virus. It is so scary and feels like the virus is on to us. I hope my family and friends do not get infected. How lives have been changing since March this year. Looks like the rest of the year will also be revolving around the virus. Hope this passes soon. 'til tomorrow.

Unlock 1.0 Day 17

It was a great day at work. I had no meetings or calls and could do some focussed work. I could do almost everything that I planned on doing. It has been raining incessantly in the city in the evenings of late, sometimes extending to all night. It has cooled the temperature of the city quite considerably. We are on tenterhooks to know if there will be another lockdown in the city due to the sharp rise in the number of cases of virus. Apart from this- nothing much to write. 'til tomorrow.

Unlock 1.0 Day 16

Times are scary. The virus seems so much closer to us now than ever before. Our neighbouring building in Hyderabad has one positive case and it is also a person whom we knew well. Also, there is at least one positive case in 500m radius from us. It is quite scary at the moment. Some parts of the city have been locked down too. I hope we are able to survive this crazy time. There are talks of a second lock down in the city. I hope this is controlled soon.

Unlock 1.0 Days 13,14,15

Unfortunately I could not keep up with my promise of publishing a non-lockdown related post as promised but it will be on soon. I had internet problems from Sunday night and could not work on many things I had planned working on. Anyway, I am back from today again unless internet plays the spoilsport again. Anyway, the cases of the virus has suddenly spiked up in Bangalore. There is a possibility of a second lockdown. Already 4-10 areas are locked again. Across our country, the cases are steadily rising. I also hope that the situation with our neighbouring countries improve in the coming days. I just want to live peacefully and also hope that the neighbouring countries also find that peace. That's it for today- My 200th Post!!

Unlock 1.0 Days 10,11,12

I took a break from blogging for the last 2 days. Nothing noteworthy happened in the 2 days. They were very busy at work and also working to complete some modules of the course I am taking. I am also very proud to say that I have been very consistent with my 10k steps and journalling challenge completion. Tomorrow there will be a solar eclipse for a long time- 10:30am to 1:30pm. Though there is no evidence that performing certain activities at that time causes any harm, I am a little superstitious (little stitious :-) being an The Office fan), so I did some prep work for it today. Other than this-nothing new enough- cases are rising, number of deaths have crossed 12k in our country :-(. Tomorrow, I will be publishing another non lockdown-unlock related blog. Hope you will enjoy it.

Unlock 1.0 Day 9

Today our country and one or a couple of our neighbouring countries are had serious clashes. Sometimes when I look at Europe and when I look at US and its neighbours, I see that the secret to their prosperity is mutual peace and harmonious living. What's more, most of them have come together as union. They are busy spending their resources on healthcare and education and emphasizing on the ease of life, while here, in ours and our neighbouring countries, we are spending on defence. It is so important to come together and be prosperous together. I do not think it will happen in my lifetime but I'll dream :). So other than this,  I have created my professional account on Insta. Otherwise, it is just another day!
